Working with mission teams, locally and from across the region, we provide lunches during the summer to multiple low income apartment complexes. These children depend upon school lunches and during the summer break they often go without good nutrition. While serving lunches, volunteers spend time talking to the kids, playing games and providing encouragement. No child is ever turned away for any reason. Children can have seconds and thirds if they are still hungry.
In addition, those children who sign are picked up for two-week day camps where they are taught Bible lessons, have recreation activities like rock climbing, basketball, inflatable water slides and games led by volunteers.
During the school year, we continue to pick these children up in vans and buses led by local volunteers. Our Thursday after-school program provides hot meals and character building programs to children and gives us a way to go deeper into the needs of our families.
It is through our relationships with the children and their parents that we are able to identify the best way to help each family. Sometimes the best way to help a single mom is to change the starter on her car. Other times it means just taking them to lunch and listening to their struggles. We take a comprehensive approach to lifting families out of poverty, meaning when we identify a need we are free to address it within the bounds of good judgement.
